Munich 2018 Winter Olympic bid – Interface design
As i love supporting good friends when they produce such awesome work, i thought i would post something that a friend has recently been involved with. The video responds to the Munich 2018 Winter Olympics hosting bid. The interface design and animations are by Marc Osswald.
Marc was approach by Schusterjungen & Hurenkinder and Technik und Design GmbH in München to produce an interface system that would coincide with making München stand out as a vibrant and inspiring city to host the famous winter games in 2018.
The interaction helps the viewer navigate themselves around the famous Germanic city of München. The user is able to explore around the ‘proposed’ sites that are being turned into Olympic and tourist hotspots. Many of us already know that München last hosted the games in 1972 in where the Olympia site still stands to this day; I hope that if München wins the bid that the old site will both reflect and being incorporated in a way that responds to its history.
The interaction was used as a showreel piece during the winter Olympics this year in Vancouver, Canada! Bravo to Marc for such nice use of interface design!

The Mill are a large scale visual FX team coming out of London, New York and Los Angeles. They were responsible for closing the festival this year and they did so with a nice group presentation focusing primarily on their post production work they did for Nike on ‘Write the Future’. An advertisement spot that notably took the Internet by storm at the beginning of the this years World Cup.

They went on discussing the ‘making of’ and did a nice job of showing alot of the thought and design process. Storyboards, to the use of the massive tool used for realising large scale crowd environments alongside the VFX they covered throughout such an enormous project. They called it the biggest VFX advertisement ever made. Funny enough i believe them.

To end our review; above we showcase the OFFF titles designed and produced by ‘The Mill’ for this years festival.

iScraper field testing
We wanted to get some feedback on our iScraper application. So we grabbed a video camera, an iPhone and went to Marienplatz, the central spot in Munich. See iScraper in action in the video!

Quasar. Audiovisual Artwork.
We’ve been working late to bring you this piece of audiovisual art. It has been created for an article that will appear in the next WEAVE magazine (should be out in early march), where we describe the making of it.
So, what is it you ask? It is an audiovisual composition that is based on a single set of MIDI notes. Those notes influence both music and graphics at the same time. We did not take the usual route of creating a piece of music first and then find some visualization for it; instead both elements have been developed at the same time. When we decided to change something with the graphics, the changes immediately influenced the music as well.
We find this approach most fascinating and are thrilled to explore it in more depth as soon as possible.
There’s also a Flickr set for this. Oh, and it has been done with Processing and Live.

YouCube interface
You can watch up to 6 youtube videos simultaneously with the YouCube interface by Aaron Meyers. It maps the videos on a 3D cube and allows the user to switch through by rotating it. At first sight it looks nice, but especially because of the hype about 3D interfaces, we have to question applications like this. »Which value does it add to our lives?« (John Thackara)
ghosts / heartbeats – a generative music video
While working on my generative wireframes, I got more and more interested in how something like that would look when set in motion. Then I came up with is what you see in this video:
You might notice that it doesn’t look anything like my previous work. That is one of the aspects I love so much about generative design: you never know where you will end up. I started out with some rotating ellipses and came to a completely different result by simply changing parameters and editing tiny bits of code. There is a Flickr set with some screenshots from earlier versions.
As far as the result is concerned, it is not audio reactive. Different types of animations are triggered by pressing keys. Additionally, there’s some modifier keys that change the behaviour of various elements. Actually, the program has some more possibilities that just didn’t fit into the context of that particular video. I am looking forward to use them in future work.
Oh, and it was made with Processing.
