TOCA ME 09 coverage Part IV: Joel Gethin Lewis

Continuing our coverage of TOCA ME 09, we turn to Joel Gethin Lewis. He’s an Interaction Designer, so it felt like we found a soulmate while he was talking about his projects and his philosophy of designing interactive media ; ) Joel studied computer science and later did his MA in interaction design at the RCA in London. Thereafter he was working at United Visual Artists (UVA) for more than three years, before he decided to quit and start his own company called yesyesno… we feel you man!

Joel talked about his projects like the sound and stage visualization of the Massive Attack world tour, the worlds first interactive christmas lights at London and his favourite programming environment openframeworks (note from the editor: it rocks!).

Openframeworks was also the thing that made Joel dive deeper into open source development. It gives designers and developers the possibility to start faster and (perhaps) fail faster, which is a good thing as it dramatically reduces the cost (in terms of time, money and attention) of trying out new stuff. After all, as Joel pointed out, ideas are easy, but doing is hard. And open source makes doing a lot easier.
