NODE10 – Exhibitions

Besides the workshops and lectures NODE10 hosts two exhibitions. One at the »Frankfurter Kunstverein« titled »abstrakt Abstrakt – The Systemized World«, which seeks to help understand the nature and effects of abstraction systems. The second exhibition called »NODE Deluxe« consists of 9 selected works, one of which is Quasar Interactive. This exhibition balances art and play as well as digital and analogue.

Rhonda Forever!

I first stumbled upon Rhonda some months ago (how the hell could I not write a post about it then!?). It is a very interesting 3D drawing application made with openframeworks. The basic idea is to always draw in 2D, but to be able to rotate your drawing around any axis at any time, thereby creating three dimensional wire artworks. You get a pretty decent impression from the demo video on their site.

What’s new is that Rhonda now has a sister project called Sonic Wire Sculptor, which is all about music. The y axis translates to the pitch of a note and the whole drawing is revolving in 3D. Again, the demo video gives you everything you need!

Notable Notetable called Noteput

noteput_1

Tomorrow the envis team will be hanging around at Schwäbisch Gmünd to have a look at the latest work from the students. We expect some innovative concepts at the media lab like the last years project from Jonas Heuer and Jürgen Gräf. Notput is an interactive music table with tangible notes, that combines all three senses of hearing, sight and touch to make learning the classical notation of music for children and pupils more easy and interesting.

All basic clefs, note values and accidentals exist as single wood elements. Whole, half, quarter and eighth notes differ not only in their form, but also in their weight: Long note values are heavier than short ones. The idea is pretty simple and the experimental approach is enjoyable and informative at the same time.

Why don´t we use tools like that at school?

Quasar. Audiovisual Artwork.

We’ve been working late to bring you this piece of audiovisual art. It has been created for an article that will appear in the next WEAVE magazine (should be out in early march), where we describe the making of it.

So, what is it you ask? It is an audiovisual composition that is based on a single set of MIDI notes. Those notes influence both music and graphics at the same time. We did not take the usual route of creating a piece of music first and then find some visualization for it; instead both elements have been developed at the same time. When we decided to change something with the graphics, the changes immediately influenced the music as well.

We find this approach most fascinating and are thrilled to explore it in more depth as soon as possible.

There’s also a Flickr set for this. Oh, and it has been done with Processing and Live.

Fresh stuff for your iTunes

This post has exceptionally nothing to do with interaction design or media technology. It´s  just about music… Tonight The Skydrunk Heartbeat Orchestra will release their third album called »Grown«, which has been featured at FM4, Bayern3 and EgoFM the last weeks and will be released by Cologne based indie label Rookie Records. As the designer of the original bandlog and first cover artwork I feel kind of »emotional connected« to this guys. When you will listen to their music you find out that their style is hard to describe… I would call it a mixture of Ska, Rock and Polka. Just check the Skydrunk Player or feed your iTunes with some fresh stuff.
